The National Council of Catholic Women, founded on March 4, 1920, by the U.S. Catholic bishops, will celebrate its 96th year with a project called A Million Works of Mercy. Beginning on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 3, 2016, and ending on the Feast of Christ the King, November 20, 2016, women are asked to engage in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy across the nation to reach the ambitious goal of 1,000,000 Works of Mercy. A monthly count will track the goal on the website as we carry out our mission to serve God and our neighbors.
The National Council of Catholic Women gives women a unified voice, a program of service and a vehicle for collaboration. NCCW’s mission is to act through its members to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service. Its programs respond with Gospel values to the needs of the Church and society in the modern world. President Sheila Hopkins says, “A perfect example is NCCW’s concurrent work on battling pornography, an issue of serious concern for the U.S. bishops. NCCW is developing its own resource on the media to help women understand and address the prevalence of pornography in technology and its impact on marriage and family.”
Another focus is the fight against human trafficking, educating the public on how to identify signs and report situations that look like labor or sex trafficking. Of particular concern is the plight of children who are picked up on the streets or are living at home and involved in sex trafficking with no knowledge by the parents.
