Leavenworth, Kan. – Sister Mary Kamperschroer, 76, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) for 57 years died May 26, 2017 in Ross Hall at the SCL Mother House. Sister Mary’s life was celebrated during a vigil on Tuesday, May 30, 7 p.m., and Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 31, 10:30 a.m., both in Ross Chapel, SCL Mother House, 4200 South 4th Street, Leavenworth, Kan.

Born on March 21, 1941, in La Crosse, Wisc., Mary Catherine Kamperschroer grew up in Billings, Mont., where she met the SCLs. She entered the religious community in August 1959 and professed first vows as Sister John Therese. She later returned to her baptismal name.

Sister Mary spent the first part of her religious life as an elementary school teacher in Los Angeles; Topeka, Kan.; Independence and Kansas City, Mo.; and Butte, Mont. She then became a medical technologist and applied her scientific mind in SCL and SCL Health hospitals in Butte; Denver; Santa Monica, Calif.; Grand Junction, Colo.; and Leavenworth. From 1996 to 2011, Sister Mary worked as a technology director and administrative assistant with Sylvan Learning Centers in Los Angeles. Since 2012, she generously volunteered her time at Saint John’s Health Center, the public library and an animal shelter in the Santa Monica area where she lived.

From her early childhood, Sister Mary had a great love of animals. On her recent return to the SCL Mother House, she was comforted knowing that her SCL friends in Santa Monica had found good homes for her cat Princess and other pets. Sister Mary loved nature and was a gifted photographer. She was a happy, active and curious person with a positive outlook.

Sister Mary was preceded in death by her parents Cornelius and Dorothy, and brother Billy. She is survived by her sister Marjorie Michelotti, Butte; brothers Peter (Wise River, Mont.) and John (East Wenatchee, Wash.); their families; cousins; and her SCL Community.
