Ben, Rita and Sophia Pehl

“I wish our parish had ______.” Fill in the blank. We’ve all said this at some point. When we joined Sacred Heart in Terry in 2013, we felt the need for an adult Bible study. Instead of waiting for someone else to start it, we answered God’s call to start a Bible study ourselves. The whole process was a lot easier than we thought it would be, largely in part to the excellent material that we as Catholics have available to us. We aren’t experts on the Church or the Bible, but we don’t have to be to facilitate a Bible study group. The first year our group studied the Catholicism series by Fr. Robert Barron; we are now studying The Bible Timeline by Jeff Cavins. Both studies utilize discussion questions and videos, so all of the hard work is done for us. In fact, the most difficult part of starting a Bible study in our parish was standing up in front of the congregation at Mass, inviting them to join our group! Despite our initial nervousness, our invitation was well received, and we now have about ten people who join us every Sunday before Mass for Bible study. We’re glad we took the initiative to turn our wish into a reality.
