Brother Bede Baldry, FSC, celebrated his 50th Jubilee as Brother in the Catholic Church on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. He also celebrated with family and friends on August 5 in Billings.

Born and raised in Montana, he is the youngest of thirteen children born to Chester and Lillian Baldry. His brothers and sisters are Arlee, Rodney, Helen, Buck, Doreen, Joan, Chester, Betty, Vernon, Shirley, Geri and Ike. He has many nieces and nephews.

He entered religious life at Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota, where he received a firm and loving understanding of the meaning of prayer. He still has loving memories of the place, and returns annually to visit. He served in religious education and nursing in Richardton and Minot in the Bismarck Diocese. He was co-founder of Re-Creation while at Assumption Abbey.

He transferred to the De La Salle Christian Brothers and has served in various ministries throughout the District in vocation and formation programs and religious education. He served in Kenya with the young Brothers, and also in leadership in the community. Brother Bede later returned to Montana and worked with Native Americans, a ministry he loved and valued and celebrated with them.

When he later moved to Chicago, he worked in the Midwest District Office and served at the Brother David Darst Center, an education facility for peace, justice and spirituality programs. After several years, he returned to Montana where he ministered at the Fort Peck Indian Reservation at Poplar, Brockton, Fort Kipp, and also ministered in Culbertson and Bainville. He was also a member of the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings staff, addressing the needs of urban Native Americans in the Billings area.

His education allowed for many experiences. He has experienced programs leading to certificates and degrees. The education/certification programs are as follows: Peerless High School, Assumption College, St. Joseph’s Nursing Program, Dickinson State College-Nursing, Cardinal Stritch-Religoius Studies and Special Education (in Milwaukee), Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse, Wisc., Maryknoll Studies in Kenya, Loyola Pastoral Studies in Chicago, Kateri Indian Ministries in Great Falls and Spokane, Wash., Lasallian Social Justice Institute, Buttimer Institute, and Lasallian Leadership Institute.
