A Work of Mercy and a Labor of Love

On October 8, 2017, group of St. Matthew’s youth and adult volunteers of Sidney and the mission, St. Michael’s of Savage, embarked on a ‘mission of mercy’ to clean and restore dignity to the Paupers’ Grave Sites at the Sidney Cemetery.

We cut weeds, uncovered and raised the grave markers. We were able to find 16 additional graves. This brought the number of graves from 57 to 73. The graves were decorated with flowers and solar lights.

I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to all of those who helped. The volunteers were: Karen Parker, Jan Martineau, Noah and Abbey Kyhl, Yvonne Volkman and granddaughter, Corbin Steinbeisser, Kaleb Reed and son, Jariah, and friends, Tommie, Mary, Isaac and Hannah Quiroz of Sidney and Bruce and Jodi Reed of Savage.

Those volunteers and our Junior High and High School youth group and their families will gather at the site on October 25 to take part in a prayer service in recognition of All Saints and All Souls Day.

It is our hope to continue to make improvements on the Paupers’ gravesites and invite more community members to join us in its restoration. We ask for the prayers of our church family for the success of this project.
