I grew up on a farm. Mom taught music our home. She played organ at church and led the choir. Mom held leadership roles in various church, community and state organizations. Dad was a farmer, volunteer fireman, and member of a co-op. He and fellow parishioners built our modest church.

The term “stewardship” was not a word used then. As children, we helped at events in our community, school, and parish. This “forced” labor became a source of friendship and community. Mom’s motto, “When you think you have done enough, do some more,” still resonates with me.

When my children entered Catholic School, it was expected as members of the community, to volunteer. I found camaraderie with fellow parents, made new friends, and discovered talents I never knew.

I was invited to a diocesan meeting several years ago. While there, I realized that I was asked to attend for a reason. I found that there is a name for all that my family and other had done for years – and it was Stewardship!

Stewardship does not come easy for some; and for many it is synonymous with fundraising. Stewardship should involve welcoming, evangelizing and helping those in need, all in the name of Christ Jesus. Through stewardship we become engaged members of our communities. So, use the talents and blessings God gave you and know that we, our parishes, our communities and our church are stronger because of stewards who care for and about us.
