Recently the youth of St. Margaret’s Church in Geraldine prepared a biscuit mix for the Chouteau County Food Bank. Assembling the mix that will become pancakes, biscuits, coffee cake, cookies, etc… were Sean Bronec, Christian McKelvy, Garret Diekhans, Hayden Diekhans, Dani McKelvy, Kellan Diekhans and Brooks Diekhans. Forty-six bags of the mix were prepared.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2015, five elementary youth, along with Shana Diekhans and Trish Eklund, set off on a field trip to Great Falls, with the first stop at the Chouteau County Food Bank in Fort Benton to deliver the bags of biscuit mix. The staff at the Food Bank shared how much the mix is appreciated. When people come in they often ask for the biscuit mix.

The next stop was at St. Vincent DePaul Society in Great Falls. Our guide explained the different commissions of the Society and the focus of the many ministries. A tour of the store and their food bank where huge container of bulk food items are stored, was amazing. The group gained new insights into the many needs people have and the ways the Society reaches out to help them.

The Poor Clares Monastery was the next destination. The youth found the information about life in a monastery, which focused on prayer, fascinating; so different from their lives, which are connected to the modern culture. The history of St. Clare was explained as we looked at the paintings depicting her life. Pausing in their beautiful chapel and hearing about their unique crucifix and other symbols was very meaningful.

Before heading back to Geraldine the group stopped for ice cream. No outing is complete without a special tasty treat. St. Margaret’s Elementary youth enjoyed missing an afternoon of school, but more than that, they learned a great deal about people in need and about the many ministries that are focused on helping others.
