St. Vincent de Paul, Billings

Over the last few years I have written articles that go in our St. Vincent de Paul newsletter every month. My fear is that after writing articles on so many topics the ideas and thoughts may at times become repetitive. This month I will share an experience that I had over this past summer.

Ordinations to the priesthood or diaconate are common events that take place in the Catholic Church. I have had the opportunity to attend several ordinations, watch them on TV, or the internet. I enjoy the atmosphere that accompanies the celebration, the incense, the Litany of the Saints, and the laying on of hands by all priests in attendance. These are some of the elements that come to mind when I think about the ordination ritual.

On June 26, 2015, at the Cathedral of St. Helena, the ordination ritual struck me in a whole new way. A classmate, Father Chris Lebsock, whom I have known since 1993 when I joined St. Patrick’s parish, was now being ordained to the priesthood. This was special, not only because he was a classmate but also a friend. In high school he helped me do a variety of things, most notably, signing my name to the National Honor Society Register, since I am unable to write.

As the years progressed we have stayed in contact and discussed a variety of topics – faith, football, and family. I thank Father Chris for his continued friendship and support. As the ordination ritual says, “May God who has begun the good work in you bring it to fulfillment.” God’s Blessings, Father Chris, on your ministry to the people of the Diocese of Helena.
