The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) mourn the loss of Sister Marie Helen Grieshaber, 85, who died on April 2, 2017, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Matilda Rose Grieshaber was born on April 3, 1931, in St. Joseph, Mo., one of two children of Henry F. and Rose Guethle Grieshaber. She graduated from St. Mary Grade School and Convent of the Sacred Heart High School, St. Joseph. She received a BS in elementary education from Saint Mary College, Leavenworth, Kansas.

She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Aug. 21, 1951, and, as Sister Marie Helen, made her profession of vows on Aug. 22, 1953.

Sister Marie Helen loved being an elementary teacher and was open to new experiences, including serving as a grade school computer supervisor and coordinator of a parish school of religion. She valued friendships and laughter, and offered a quip, a tease or a few words to make people smile. Sister Marie Helen returned to the Mother House in 2003 and did bookkeeping for the treasurer’s office. She retired to Ross Hall in 2014.

Survivors include her cousins and their families, and the SCL community. Her parents and her sister, Sister Lillian, also an SCL, preceded her in death.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18. Interment followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds.
