Seminarian John Pankratz was thurifer for Palm Sunday Mass at St. Anthony in Laurel. Afterwards, he spoke to the children of his journey to the priesthood.

The inscription above the doors to Theological College, our national seminary, reads Providentia Dei Nos Providebit, “The Providence of God Will Provide for Us.” Expanding on this assurance, Father David Thayer, a faculty member at Theological College, explained that it is the duty of the seminary faculty to help seminarians out the front door, one way or another.

I have discerned that God is not calling me to continue seminary formation. This realization came as a surprise to me, as I’m sure it comes to some of you now. Having given five years to the diocese in formation I was initially disappointed that I would not see my time in seminary completed in ordination. However, placing my trust in God, I am confident in my decision to leave the seminary and I look forward to what God as in store for my future. My formation may not be completed in ordination, but I am certain that the time I spent in formation was according to God’s will. I am happy and at peace with my decision to leave formation.

I am so grateful to Bishop Warfel, Father Jay Peterson, and Father Leo McDowell for the opportunity to discern well for the diocese. I am thankful to everyone in the diocese: families who shared their lives with me, Knights of Columbus Councils who supported me, and all of you for your constant prayers. Please be assured of my continued prayers for you. The time I was able to spend at Holy Trinity Seminary and Theological College will impact the rest of my life, through subtle lessons and lasting friendships.

Thank you all so much,
- Grant Kelly
